Scotland’s Stormy Seas Inspire Artist

Scotland’s weather, eh? One minute you’re basking in glorious sunshine, the next you’re holding tightly to a lamppost trying not to blow away. While days like today might encourage a cosy afternoon by the fire with a book or a movie, for the more artistically inclined, today is a day to be inspired. Contemporary art gallery, Colinton Arts, has announced the first solo exhibition from Edinburgh-based artist, Gill Knight ‘The Light Surrounding Us’ which launched last night (Friday 4th February) and will run until Saturday the 5th March 2022.

Having studied Hospitality Management at Edinburgh’s Napier University in the 90s, Knight went on to become a chef, working her way up to Executive Chef level. But almost eight years ago, Knight put down her knives and picked up a paint brush, and as they say…’the rest is history’.  The self-taught artist works from her studio in South Queensferry where her atmospheric, semi-abstract style and unique vision of land and sea perfectly captures the elements. The immersive, emotional, and energetic seascapes and landscapes use a reduced palette to convey a strong sense of atmosphere to the viewer.

Gill comments, ‘Regular outdoor walks feed my need to transfer experiences, feelings, and memories into paint. I draw on my love of light and shade to immerse the viewer in a world of possibilities and occasional peril.’

The artworks in the exhibition are available to view and purchase through the Colinton Arts website www.colinton-arts.co.uk.
