Just Another Mani Monday

Whether you prefer your nails short and sleek or long and adorned, there’s a 2021 mani trend to suit all.

From the velvet-covered chairs to the glass bottles of beautiful colour lined neatly on marble-effect shelves, there's many things that make a visit to the salon a magical experience—and one we've sorely missed. Still, painting our nails has become a fun new pastime for many of us over the last twelve months, and with spring finally kicking into gear, now’s the perfect time to update your manicure look. But which talon trends are worth noting? From noteworthy hues to ante-upping art, we spoke to one of Scotland’s most talented nail artists and owner of Glasgow’s newest nail studio, SWAK, Jen Seales, to find out which nail looks she’s loving for the season ahead. 'The main focus this spring is on nail health and hand care,' explains Seales.

'With all the extra washing and over-use of sanitisers, our nails and hands have really suffered. They are over-processed and dehydrated which causes dry, cracked skin. Also, with a lack of access to nail salons for much of last year, many clients had to resort to trying to remove their gel and acrylic nails at home, and are now seeing a negative impact on their nail health.’

It’s important to have nails strong and healthy to ensure any design looks its best. 'I’d recommend a twice-weekly hand and nail care routine where time is taken to really pamper yourself,’ continues Seales. 'Hand exfoliates such as the Peacci ManiPedi Scrub or Byredo's Vetyver Hand Scrub will restore the appearance of the hands, and using cuticle oil is an absolute must for both the nails and the surrounding skin. I love the NAF! Stuff cuticle oils, which smell out of this world. Investing in a good hand soap also makes a huge difference, and hand cream after washing is a must.’ Now, let’s talk trends.

Abstract Shapes

“We’ll be seeing lots of abstract organic shapes this season. It’s a loose and easy design style which can make it a great option for beginners with an artistic eye. For those looking for a pop of glamour, metallic foil gives an extra luxurious finish.'

Modern French

'For a subtle take on nail art, look to the classic French manicure but with a twist. I love a gradient of coloured tips for a fresh and modern springtime look, or taking your favourite on-trend pattern such as tortoiseshell applied just as a French tip.'

Base Tones

'Nude is always a popular option, and we’re finally starting to see brands coming out with larger shade ranges to cater to all skin tones. Add interest with a simple cuticle dot or horizontal line. Flesh-toned shades are a great option for short, neat nails, and while the almond shape has been an ongoing favourite, I predict the "squoval" nail shape will be more popular this season.'

Bubblegum Pink

'After the dark days of winter, spring always sees a renewed craving for some colour. Bubblegum pink adorned the nails at Fendi, Christian Cowan, and Tom Ford, so I expect this will be a big look this season.'

Fun & Bold

'Nail art is the best way to really express yourself! Bold designs in floral, fruits, butterflies, flames, or even emojis are guaranteed to be big this spring. Have fun and let your imagination be your inspiration.'
