New Era Interiors
Decor is moving in a new direction, here’s how to bring the latest trends into your own home…
When King Charles was crowned, the New Carolean Age began. This era will usher in trends that blend modern techniques with ancient iconography that encapsulates British heritage, nature and folklore. Mixing toiles, folk florals and muted palettes straight from nature this look is classical and yet modern. It looks back while marching forward, making it perfect for autumn/winter 2023.
We spoke to Scotland’s top interiors experts and asked for ideas to help transform a living space into a warm and welcoming atmosphere for autumn.
Warm Colour Palette: Ruth Heath from interior design consultancy eat sleep colour says, ‘Adding some earthy tones to your living space is the perfect way to give your home a warm hug of hygge. Earthy tones look great with navy, dark greens, and neutral colours. Start by using these for your sofa and adding accessories in dark red, terracotta, or brown. Doing this with throws, cushions, and curtains will make your space even cosier. Don't forget the candles and plants and create a mobile-free zone for maximum hygge vibes. Get ready to snuggle up and enjoy autumn in style.’
Seasonally Inspired Decor: Sabrina Damiani, founder of Damiani Fine Dining adds, ‘Introduce themed decor to bring the spirit of autumn indoors. Display decorative pumpkins, acorns, or seasonal foliage arrangements on tables, mantels, or shelves. Incorporate autumn wreaths or garlands with colourful leaves and berries to create a welcoming entrance or focal point in your living or dining room.’
Textiles: Emma Macdonald, CEO and Co-founder of TBCo says, ‘As the temperatures start to drop, adding textures through different textiles can create a warmer atmosphere that feels more inviting over autumn and winter. Switch out lightweight linens with materials like wool and alpaca fleece that will keep you warm, but also look great draped strategically over sofas, armchairs and beds. The great thing about soft furnishings is they can be swapped seasonally and still bring a room together.’
Seasonal Scent: Jamie McGowan, owner of Essence of Harris says, ‘Warm your home this autumn by bringing in the earthy aromas of the season. Burn soy candles or subtly fragrance your favourite room with a reed diffuser, accentuating the woodsy scents of fall - fig, fresh greenery and amber will create an inviting aroma.
‘Haar and Adru from our Elements collection capture the essence of the changing seasons with their rich bases of sandalwood, cedarwood, leather and tonka beans. Transport the warm glow of Harris to your home this autumn with one of our signature scents.’
Warm Lighting: Louise Bramhill, creative director of Studio LBI suggests, ‘Good lighting is essential for creating that intimate ambience that defines a well-designed home. Without it, even the most beautiful house will feel uncomfortable.
‘We've just launched a range of stunning lighting, but for a quick solution, simply switch bright white lightbulbs — which exude a stark, harsh light — for soft, warm ones with a colour temperature of 2,700 Kelvin. Use them in all light fittings, from recessed spots to table lamps, for uniformity and flow. Your home will feel instantly calmer and more welcoming.’
Seasonal Art and Accessories: Glenn Malloy of Spoiled Life boutique in St Andrews says, ‘Update your wall art and accessories to reflect the autumn season. Swap out summery prints for nature-inspired artwork, or richly coloured paintings. Add decorative accents like vases filled with dried flowers or bowls of seasonal fruits to mantels and console tables for a touch of autumnal charm.’
Layered Rugs: Interior designer Emma Hoyle from Onyx Interiors recommends, ‘Add warmth and texture to your floors by layering rugs. Choose a plush sheepskin or wool rug as a base and layer it with a smaller, patterned rug on top. This not only adds visual interest but also provides an extra layer of insulation against chilly floors.’
Seasonal Tablescapes: Kate Fairlie from Truffle Tablescapes says, ‘Update your dining table with an autumn-inspired tablescape. Use soft table linens in warm colours and incorporate natural elements like rattan or seagrass placemats to add texture. Finish by decorating your table centre with autumnal accessories such as pumpkins, pinecones and seasonal flowers.’
