Linder Takes Root: Danger Came Smiling Blooms at the Botanics

Celebrated British artist Linder Sterling lands in Edinburgh with Linder: Danger Came Smiling, a provocative new exhibition exploring gender, nature and transformation. A powerful clash of punk spirit and botanical beauty awaits at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

If you like your art with edge, energy and just the right dose of rebellion, make a date with Linder: Danger Came Smiling — the latest major exhibition from the iconic feminist artist known simply as Linder. Running from 23 May until 27 October 2025 at Inverleith House, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, this powerful new show is part of an ambitious three-year residency exploring gendered power structures through the lens of nature.

Expect Linder’s signature photomontage, immersive installations and archival material drawn from punk, surrealism and the natural world — all set against the lush, living backdrop of the Botanics. The exhibition’s title nods to Linder’s 1983 post-punk EP, hinting at the artist’s lifelong commitment to challenging norms and championing female agency.

Supported by the Freelands Foundation and developed with the help of the RBGE’s herbarium, library and living collections, Danger Came Smiling is more than just a gallery visit — it’s a provocation, a celebration, and an invitation to look differently at the world around you.

Linder: Danger Came Smiling runs from 23 May until 27 October 2025 at Inverleith House, RBGE. Free entry. Over 16s.
