5 Top Things to Do at The Reeling

Glasgow’s summer celebration of Scottish traditional music, The Reeling, is about hit and the festival’s founder, Michael Pellegrotti, is sharing his pick of the things you’ll want to see and do while you’re there.

Between a stellar line-up of some of the hottest acts in Scottish traditional music to a taste of some of the country's best local food and drink. It’s hard to pick what to get up to at The Reeling 2024. There’s even a ceilidh for kids!

The Reeling – Glasgow’s summer celebration of traditional music – first burst onto the Scottish festival scene in June last year.  This year, the 5,000-capacity event takes place on June 8th and 9th, the same weekend as Taylor Swift comes to Edinburgh. And it will give music fans a tough choice as the city’s southside park will be brought to life with world-class performances spanning two stages, a dedicated kids area and high-quality Scottish food and drink offerings from the likes of Birch coffee and Dough Man’s Land pizza.

Birch coffee

Highland specialty coffee brand Birch will be popping up in Glasgow for two days only, serving up much needed cups of coffee throughout the festival. The cafes in Portree and Inverness are hugely popular with tourists and locals alike, inspired by the world-leading coffee scene in Melbourne. It’s an opportunity to sample some absolutely cracking coffee not normally available in Glasgow: definitely not to be missed. And did I mention it’s run by Niall Munro, son of famous Runrig frontman Donnie.

Niteworks

It goes without saying that Niteworks are a must-see for the festival this year. After recently announcing their plans to disband, The Reeling will be one of your last chances to see one of the scene’s true innovators.  It’s sure to be a big one, with the folk/electronica band closing off the Saturday night on the main stage.

Brìghde Chaimbeul

An unmissable act for me is Brìghde Chaimbeul, who has played with the likes of Caroline Polachek. She’s set to make her Reeling debut on Sunday. Her music is utterly mesmerising music and she’s sure to please the crowds on Stage 2. The festival is actually named after Brìghde’s first album!

Dough Man’s Land

For pizza fans, Dough Man's Land will return to The Reeling for a second year, dishing out wood fired pizza from their eye-catching horse box which is usually parked near Kelvingrove Park. A good pizza is, in my humble opinion, the perfect al fresco treat - and we’re strong believers that just because you’re at a festival doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be eating great food.

Posh Pies

Come and get your pie fix with Posh Pies: a new vendor for 2024, and the latest venture from the Screaming Peacock family. Locally sourced and produced, think delightfully saucy pies with chunky wedges and some opulent flavours, from wild venison with rich red wine gravy to curried pheasant with mild Thai curry sauce. They also make a banging macaroni pie, and of course have vegan options.

The Reeling festival returns to Rouken Glen Park on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June 2024.
