The virtual Christmas market where you’ll find the most unique, Scottish-crafted gifts

Spot Design Market is Glasgow's seasonal artisan market which, thankfully, has successfully pivoted online this Christmas. Trust us when we say it’s the perfect place to complete your Christmas shopping.

This weekend marks Small Business Saturday and while we’d usually wrap up warm and sip Glühwein whilst browsing the Christmas markets to show our support, this is still very much verboten. However, let’s get creative and recreate that festive spirit in the comfort of our own homes by heating up spiced cider and logging on to Glasgow’s Spot Design Market this weekend (5th-6th December 2020) instead.

Spot was launched by textile designer, Anna Hepburn, and Sarah Henderson of Squid Ink, in April 2019. Both makers decided there was room in Glasgow for a considered market boasting a higher-end, more design-led product offering.

Now run by Anna and Rebecca Goldie, the carefully curated market features some of Scotland’s most exciting designer makers from the worlds of ceramics, textiles, clothing, jewellery, homewares, plants, and flowers.

Award-winning illustrator, Max Machen, will join the online shopping event with his eye-catching, brightly coloured prints and accessories, 'I’ve really missed taking part in markets this year so I’m looking forward to being virtually part of a group of great independent makers this weekend.'

Dominika from Sheepski Slippers, who sells cosy handmade sheepskin moccasin slippers handcrafted by artisan makers in the Tatra Mountains of Poland, agrees. 'This year has been so hard, we’ve missed getting out to meet and chat to all our customers so much! While going virtual isn’t quite the same, we are looking forward to bringing some cosy vibes over the weekend.'

Terri, from Flowers Vermilion has attended every Spot Design Market over the last couple of years, 'It’s always been such a great event, enriched with a friendly and encouraging group of makers, artists, and designers living and working here in Scotland. Going online is the only way a lot of small businesses will get sales this year, so it’s great that this platform has been created. I will miss seeing all my customers and friends, and of course I’m looking forward to in-person markets in the future, but for now grateful to be a part of the virtual event.'
