Picture Perfect Road Trip? The Only Way Is Essex

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH JET WHEEL TYRE

Whether you’re packing up the car or hiring a camper van hitting the open road is the new way to holiday…

While many of us may head up north venturing further afield may reap rewards. The weather can really impact a holiday in the UK so for us…the only way is Essex. The driest county in the UK, it also has some of the most picturesque chocolate box villages in the country.

With agricultural history aplenty, many still feature working windmills surrounded by fields of golden wheat and blue linseed - making a trip the perfect opportunity to fill up that insta-feed! Think pretty thatched cottages, village greens, centuries-old inns, castles, and landscapes that inspired Constable.

Perception of Essex means it is largely overlooked by tourists so a scenic road trip is unlikely to be spoiled by the hoards. Here are three of our favourite villages to add to your route.

Castle Hedingham sits around 3 miles from the nearby town of Halstead, and is built around the Norman Keep which was erected around 1100.

Take a trip to nearby Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where you’ll see where the famous artist John Constable was inspired.

Stock is just 6 miles from the bustling city of Chelmsford, and one of the most scenic villages in the area.  Soaked in history the village dates back to the 13th century and is filled with country charm.

Before you embark upon your Essex adventure our friends at Jet Wheel Tyre have a few top tips to ensure your car is in tip top health to see you on your way…

Exterior

Take advantage of the opportunity to wash your car thoroughly, by hand. Use the time to look for any potential damage that might indicate a problem within the car, check your mirrors and number plates for looseness or any dirt or grime obscuring their visibility, and ensure the windows and windscreen are free of cracks and chips that could worsen while the car is in use.

Boot

Have a look at what is in the boot before you let the family pile in all their 'must-take' items. You should have a small but comprehensive tool-kit, emergency supplies, such as drinkable water, energy bars, a blanket and a first aid kit, as well as a red triangle, and the jack and pump needed to change your spare tyre – which, of course, should be present too.

Tyres

Speaking of tyres, check yours carefully for signs of damage. Inflate your tyres to the appropriate pressure and make sure the spare is checked too – there is nothing  worse than getting a flat tyre and discovering that the spare is flat or damaged. If you find any issues with your tyres, get them replaced quickly.

Fluids

Fluid checks are a must too. Make sure your vehicle's reservoirs for oil, water, and brake fluid are nicely topped up, and do not forget your fuel level too.

Lights, Brakes and Horn

Finally, make sure that you can be seen on the road, and that you can stop suddenly if you need to. Toot your horn (making sure it is a safe time and place to do so!), practise emergency stops and get someone to help you check that all your lights are working well.

As well as the above checks, you should take your car for a spin on the nearest motorway – better to find any potential issues while there is time, before committing to the road.

Peace of mind is priceless, and can be easily and cheaply achieved.
