Want a flawless self-tan this summer? Hood spoke to Crazy Angel tanning ambassador Abbie McCann for all her expert insider tips…
Achieving the perfect self-tan involves more than just slathering on a tanning product. It requires proper preparation of the skin, choosing the right product, and the application technique of a pro. Here’s how to get that professional-looking glow…
Prepare your skin the day before: 24 hours before applying a self-tanner, ensure all hair removal is done, exfoliate using a gentle scrub to remove dead skin cells and smooth out rough patches then use a rich moisturiser.
Start with a clean canvas: If possible, on the day of your tan, exfoliate and moisturise again. But before you apply the self-tan, shower off all products – this gives you the perfect canvas.
Use a barrier cream: We’ve all seen tell-tale signs of self-tan on hands, ankles, knees and elbows but applying a barrier cream can help avoid this as it creates a protective layer that prevents the self-tanner from staining and streaking. It also helps to nourish the skin, preventing dryness and patchiness, ensuring a more even, natural-looking tan and enhancing the overall results. Apply liberally to hands and pat into areas where tan tends to grip.
Choose the right product for you: Self-tanning products come in so many different forms: sprays, lotions, oils, drops, mousses, instant, express, gradual, wash-off, wear off… Choose a formula that suits your skin type and desired level of colour. If you're new to self-tanning, try the Crazy Angel Self Tan Lotion (£19). The first application will give you that chic ‘couple of days in the sun’ look, reapply for a ‘week in Spain’ and a couple of days later for a ‘fortnight in the Caribbean’.
Blend in thoroughly: After applying the product, use a clean, damp cloth to blend any streaks or lines. Pay special attention to the creases and folds of your skin around the neck, underarms, and behind the knees.
Allow time to dry: Self-tanning products take time to dry, so avoid getting dressed or touching your skin for at least 10-15 minutes after application. If you're using a spray or mist, wait until the product has fully dried before getting dressed.
After care: To maintain your self-tan, avoid showering or swimming for at least 8-10 hours after application. Don’t use loofahs, flannels or body exfoliators and make sure you pat skin dry, don’t rub. Moisturise daily with an oil-free product to keep your skin hydrated and your tan looking fresh. Also, avoid wearing tight clothing as this can cause the tan to fade unevenly.
Protect your skin: Self tan does not offer any level of sun protection so please remember to use an SPF to look after your skin.
