Summer Hair Saviours
Summer is a season of sun, fun, and outdoor activities. While it brings joy and excitement, the heat, humidity, and exposure to UV rays can wreak havoc on our hair. Colin McAndrew, founder of the award-winning Medusa Hairdressing group says, ‘Summer can cause hair to become dry, frizzy, and brittle, leading to hair breakage and split ends. So, it is crucial to take extra care of your hair during the summer months to keep it healthy and luscious.’
Here are Colin’s five tips to care for your hair, at home and away.
Protect: Just like your skin, your hair also needs protection from the sun – yes, even in Scotland. The UV rays can damage the hair cuticles, leading to dry and brittle hair. Wear a hat or a scarf while going out in the sun or try specialist hair care products that contain SPF to protect from the sun's harmful rays.
Keep hydrated: The heat and humidity can cause hair to become dehydrated, leading to frizziness and breakage. It is essential to put moisture back by switching up your shampoo and conditioner to those with hydrating properties. I also recommend a hair mask once a week to deep condition hair and restore moisture. And drink lots of water, it’s vital for hair health.
Avoid heat: The warmer months are not the time to use heat styling tools like hairdryers, straighteners and curling irons too often. The heat from these tools can further damage your already thirsty hair. Instead, opt for lower-maintenance hairstyles that do not require heat styling tools. It’s also the perfect opportunity to embrace your natural hair texture…
Rinse well: Swimming in chlorinated or salt water can damage hair, making it dry and brittle. Rinse thoroughly after swimming in a pool or the ocean. Try a clarifying shampoo to remove any chlorine or salt residue.
Book a cut: An extra appointment slotted into the summer months can often make a real difference to the condition of our hair by keeping it healthy and preventing split ends.
