Jamie’s Capital Bites
Crab, cacio e pepe and soft serve – Edinburgh fed the Olivers well.
Jamie Oliver has been eating his way around Edinburgh with sons Buddy and River in tow, sampling some of the capital’s most delicious spots. From silky pasta to zingy crab dauphines, the city clearly left a very good taste in the celebrity chef’s mouth – and naturally, he shared every bite with his followers on Instagram.
At Tipo, Stuart Ralston’s sleek Italian on Hanover Street, the trio tucked into crab pappardelle laced with chilli and parsley, wild garlic flatbread piled with mortadella and a blizzard of pecorino, plus delicate slices of cured trout with watercress and blood orange. The standout? A perfectly pink rare breed pork chop with apple mostarda. Dessert was a nostalgic swirl of vanilla and rhubarb soft serve, topped with golden crumble.
Over at Little Capo, Stuart McCluskey’s stylish new opening on Howe Street, the Olivers got stuck into crisp courgette fries with aioli, a velvety bowl of cacio e pepe, and a generous charcuterie board complete with what Jamie called “great house pickles” – high praise from the man who turned antipasti into a family staple.
Brunch at Ardfern in Leith, from Roberta McCarron, brought even more hits: golden crab dauphines in a zingy Singapore sauce, BBQ aubergine tacos with sweetcorn, fermented chilli and feta, and for River, a full Scottish breakfast – homemade beans and all.
And of course, no proper foodie crawl through Edinburgh is complete without a stop at I.J. Mellis Cheesemongers. Jamie made time to browse the selection, clearly impressed by the capital’s cheese credentials.
