NEW: Mara on the Shore

There’s something special about a new place opening its doors – the eager faces, nervous energy, and fresh excitement in the air. I love it all, and a few hiccups along the way? I don’t mind one bit. What truly delights me is seeing a new spot embraced by its community, and that’s exactly what we found at Mara on Leith’s Shore.

Inside, the young team in matching Breton tees (a uniform I’m all for) welcomed us to a sleek space, with light ash wood and orange leather setting a chic tone. Local art lined the walls, including a piece by Ritchie Collins, whose gallery is just a stone’s throw from the bar. It’s that kind of place – local, connected, and full of heart.

Outside, every bistro chair on the pavement was filled, with Aperol Spritzes in hand and the late sun casting a golden glow over the Water of Leith. We settled inside with a sparkling non-alcoholic wine and a beer, watching the world go by, soaking in the relaxed, friendly vibe.

Mara’s current menu is concise, featuring charcuterie and mezze boards – though I’d say there’s room for improvement here. But no complaints from me – I’m all for watching a place grow. The non-alcoholic Bramble hit the spot, and my guest tested the bartenders with an off-menu Old Fashioned, which they nailed.

With a comforting 2007 playlist and staff who were attentive without hovering, it was the perfect laid-back afternoon. The crowd was a lovely mix – girlfriends enjoying cocktails and a gossip, glam older couples, families with grown-up kids, and, of course, the ever-present dogs. Mara is already well-loved, and it’s easy to see why.

But here's the thing - we have to support places like this, or we risk losing them. The heart and soul of a neighbourhood bar depends on its locals, so next time you're in the mood for a drink, why not swing by yours? Let's make sure these gems stick around.
