How to step up your springtime skincare routine

Spring has well and truly sprung, even if we’ve spent the majority of it at home - but still, it’s the perfect time to switch up your skincare routine in line with the season. The aim is to get skin looking as fresh and healthy as possible - dewy, juicy, glowing skin is most definitely in this spring.

Start with upping your intake of water - we need to hydrate inside and out. Step away from the comfort foods and re-introduce as much fresh fruit and veg as possible, all of which will boost your water intake. Then, follow our expert tips to give your skincare routine a boost ready for sunnier days.

Clever cleansing

When it comes to complexions, start with a deep cleanse, using a cleanser that won’t dry out your skin. Dermalogica’s Essential Cleansing Solution is a creamy, non-foaming formula with the antioxidant vitamins C and E, which both help improve the texture of skin.

Exfoliating will help to remove the dead skin cells that leave your skin looking dull. We like to take a gentle approach here and not be too harsh on skin. Caudalie’s Deep Cleansing Exfoliator has a rich, creamy texture that isn’t ‘scratchy’, which refines the surface of skin without drying it out.

Moisture boost

Face masks are a lovely way to give skin a moisture boost. Find a spare ten minutes in your day and incorporate a mini at-home facial with some relaxation time. Light a beautifully scented candle and apply Burt’s Bees’ Intense Hydration Treatment Mask. This gorgeous, natural face mask gives a serious hydration boost in just ten minutes. Infused with clary sage, it’ll leave your skin feeling soft and supple.

Vitamin watch

With rehydration in mind, look for moisturisers that feature vitamin C, which helps to even out skin tone and protect from external pollution, and vitamin E, which has a powerful anti-inflammatory action, is healing and super hydrating. You will be the best judge of what suits your skin type most; younger skins might want to stick to a lighter, gel-based moisturiser, while more mature skins will require a heavier, richer moisturiser. We’re big fans of the Super Facialist Vitamin C+ Skin Defence Daily Moisturiser, which is a great all-rounder to suit most skin types.

Massage message

If you can make one change to your regular routine, then massage in a facial oil at night. Even a quick, five-minute massage will really get the blood flowing. Start in the middle of your face and work upwards, using a firm pressure to work the product in and leave it to absorb. Massage is great for tired and dull complexions, as it stimulates blood flow and helps to clear any underlying congestion. The Ordinary’s Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil is a good one to try if you’re new to facial oils. And the best part? It’s only £9.

Anti-ageing tip

One of the best anti-ageing tips around is to use an SPF all year, so if you aren’t in the habit of reaching for one, this is a great time of year to start. Look for something with both UVA and UVB protection. Add some of La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios Shaka Fluide to your daily skincare stash for an SPF that’s light and non-greasy.

A bit of gradual tan on your face, that you can allow to build up, is a great way to ease you out of the greyness of winter; a healthy glow lifts your mood and adds a boost while we’re waiting for the sun to shine. And once you have that healthy glow, all you need to think about is a nice BB cream or tinted moisturiser, a slick of lipstick and a hint of mascara, and you’re good to go!
