Review: Six by Nico's 'Somewhere' Bar

A Magical Cocktail Experience

You’re likely familiar with Six by Nico, the restaurant famed for its six-course tasting menus that change theme every six weeks, but have you discovered Somewhere yet?

Somewhere is a conceptual cocktail bar by the award-winning team behind Six by Nico. Every six weeks, they open a portal to a new world—creating unforgettable experiences inspired by dreams, stories, memories, and myths.

Encounter each world through a cocktail tasting menu: curious concoctions arrive at your table with a splash of theatre and all manner of exhilarating twists. These marvellous worlds are open to all who seek to explore them, which is why they create non-alcoholic versions of each cocktail and vegetarian options for each accompaniment, with zero compromise on flavour and craft. Mixologists, chefs, and storytellers pore over the tiniest details—infusing creative magic into every sip, bite, sound, and sight to bring these fantasy realms to life. The Edinburgh outpost launched with Land of Oz earlier this summer to great acclaim with its cocktail wizardry. Next up comes Circus, set to conclude its residency in Glasgow this Sunday (21st July) and arrive in Edinburgh on Monday (22nd July). The Hood interns were no clowns when this invitation landed in the inbox and promptly booked their places at the big top.

Ambience and Service

“Book a booth,” says Lilliana, “it enhances the element of surprise throughout the evening. This spot is perfect for special occasions or as a light yet lively prelude to a night out.” Both agreed the pace of the evening is well-balanced, neither too rushed nor too slow. “It really allows you to savour each course, and the service is attentive. Waiter Flynn and bartender Harry were friendly and helpful, and clearly enjoyed delivering the theatre of the experience,” says Emilia.

The Somewhere Menu

The Big Top

El Jimador Blanco Tequila, Artichoke, Thick Cut Marmalade & Lemon

The Big Top cocktail is a standout, with artichoke bringing out a delightful sweetness. The presentation, including a cute ice cube, complements the theme. “The accompanying Truffle & Smoked Cheese Churro is a crowd-pleaser,” notes Lilliana, “and the Popcorn Oyster Mushroom, Pine Salt & Malt Vinegar are delicious, though a dip could elevate the dish.” The Pork & Prawn Corn Dog is a hit, while the veggie version is slightly less impressive. “Loved this course, what a great start to the experience,” adds Emilia.

The Magician

Scottish Gin, Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Americano, Kaffir Lime Leaves, Bubbles & Butterfly Pea

The colour-changing cocktail with butterfly pea flower is enchanting. “The hat and lovage emulsion add a whimsical touch, pairing well with the carrots and cocktail,” says Lilliana. Despite the vegetarian menu mentioning feta, it was goat cheese, but it worked well. The rabbit paired excellently with the sides. “It was my first time eating rabbit but it was tasty, this dish was smoky, sweet and salty,” Emilia remarked.

Levitation Act (optional £10)

Jinro 24 Soju

Tamarind, Smoked Paprika, Red Pepper & Lime

This extra cocktail is a highlight, a unique take on a Bloody Mary sans tomatoes, featuring sweet, spicy, and umami flavours. “It's a must-try addition to the meal,” asserts Lilliana.

Fortune Teller

Laphroaig 10 Y/O, Tosti Sweet Vermouth, Peat Smoke & Pedro Ximenez Sherry

The trio of arancini, particularly the broccoli variant, shines in this course. “The accompanying cocktail is potent and fun, with a gin base reminiscent of a negroni or martini,” says Lilliana. The dish comes with an edible tarot card, adding to the whimsical experience.

Illusionist

Coffee, JJ Whitley Artisan Vodka, Cacao Blanc

and

Havana 7 Rum, Pineapple, Lime, Coconut & Milk

This course offers playful takes on classics like the espresso martini and piña colada, creating a contrasting yet harmonious duo. “The BBQ beef is phenomenal,” says Emilia, although the hispi cabbage is merely okay. “The piña colada cocktail stands out,” adds Emilia.

The Great Escape

Torres 10 Brandy, Popcorn, Oat Milk & Egg Yolk

“Dessert is a playful and elevated take on PB&J, featuring a peanut parfait shaped like peanuts, which scores a perfect 10/10,” says Lilliana.  “The meal ends with a charming game involving unlocking a box, adding a fun and interactive element,” says Emilia.

Six by Nico's 'Somewhere' bar offers a whimsical, well-paced dining adventure perfect for special occasions or a memorable night out. The cocktails and dishes, with a few exceptions, are delightful and thoughtfully presented, making for an enchanting evening. Loved it!
